It did not surprise Light that Ryuk, nosy being that he was, quickly found the skin mags that he (Light) had purchased as a diversion for L or whomever was watching the monitors linked to the cameras stuck up in his room. He just hoped the shinigami had had the presence of mind not to examine them while the cameras were operational. But even still, he came into his room one late afternoon to find Ryuk perched on a bookshelf, studying one of the cheekiest shots, head tilted, magazine upside down. As he watched, Ryuk turned his whole self upside down and the magazine right side up.
"Ryuk, do you mind if I ask what you're doing with that magazine?" Light asked, completely baffled.
Ryuk looked up and turned himself rightside up. "Hiya, Light: I was checkin' out this magazine," he said. "I know yah bought it to confuse L and his goons when they were watchin' you, but yah mind tellin' me what this stuff is for? Pretty human girls are cute, but why they got their clothes off an' why can I see their... rosebuds."
Light smirked at this euphemism. "Well, it's pornography: it's published for men so they can handle certain urges in a safe, private environment."
"Yah told me that: what I wanna know is, what're the rosebuds for?"
This was about the weirdest thing that the shinigami had ever asked him, and Light suddenly felt awkward about answering it. Sayu had asked similar questions of their mother and father when she was younger, but this was a completely different being. "All right, those organs are part of the reproductive tract: when a woman gives birth to a baby, her breast secrete milk and contain it so she can feed it to the baby. The child sucks on the nipple and the milk flows out."
Ryuk eyed the picture in the magazine and tilted his head slowly. "Heh. I guess I can see that. But how's she give birth to the baby?"
Okay, this was getting really weird, though he had a feeling why the shinigami wanted to know: life and birth helped to define death and vice versa. Even still, he felt odd answering this question. "Okay, this is where it gets complicated, so try to pay attention." The last thing that he wanted to do in a situation like this was repeat something he felt weird explaining in the first place. "When a man gets sexually aroused, his penis stiffens and becomes erect."
"Oooh, like what happens to you when yer asleep?" Ryuk asked, insinuatingly.
Light restrained himself from looking at Ryuk with obvious discomfort. "Exactly like that. So when that happens and he's having sex with his wife or girlfriend, he inserts his penis into her vagina; he ejaculates and his sperm flows into her birth canal. Some of the sperm eventually make their way deep inside, into her uterus, the organ where she carries her baby while it's growing, then up her Fallopian tube where, if it's the right time of the month, one of her egg cells might be. The sperm burrows into the surface of the egg and fuses with the nucleus. Then the egg starts to divide into more cells; eventually, the cells start to grow into the baby's organs. Nine months later, the baby is born, passing through the birth canal and into the world."
Ryuk listened, examining the picture of the model. "Babies aren't exactly little: how do they get through that little hole?"
"Well, it is flexible, but sometimes it does happy that the baby is too big, and so the doctors attending the birth have to perform surgery to take the baby out of the mother's uterus," Light admitted.
"All that to have a kid? I think it was easier when you told me people had sex to have a good time," Ryuk said, putting down the magazine and phasing through the wall, likely in search of apples. Light let out the breath he did not realize that he had been holding.
