The first snow had fallen in the night, blanketing the Phantomhive Manor in a soft layer of white, leaving frames of frost on the window panes.

Ciel, with Sebastian at his side, had accounts to see to and thus his morning would be spent in his study, going over the proposed December catalogue: the Christmas season was not far off and the Funtom Company was bracing for a brisk trade in toys, sweets and now books: there was a new edition of Mister Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" to be released, though Ciel had had some misgivings about the illustrations that had been commissioned.

Thwack!

Ciel looked up from the ledgers and catalogues arranged on the desk. Something had splatted into the window, leaving a smudge of white on the panes of glass. "What is outside making that racket?" he muttered.

Sebastian put a hand on the back of his master's chair. "Watch and see, and the interloper might reveal herself."

A small, blonde figure in a thick, pink coat with a babushka tied about her head came to the window, holding up a snowball. "Cieee-eelll! Come out with me and play in the snow before it melts!" Elizabeth called from without, her voice muffled by the glass.

"Sebastian, please tell her that I have work today and that I can't be disturbed," Ciel said,, catching Elizabeth's gaze with his and shaking his head before looking down at the papers and books before him, making it clear he had work to do.

"Would you disappoint your fiancee? She has been wishing to see you and you know the saying about all work and no play," Sebastian coaxed.

Ciel sighed. "Very well, fetch my gaiters and my rough coat," he said, pushing his chair from his desk.

Elizabeth had started to roll a snowball, and after a few pushes, the ball had grown too large to push. Just as well: she would need a good, firm base for the snowman she wished to make. She started rolling a second ball for the middle, careful to keep it smaller than the first. Lifting it presented no difficulty, but after rolling a smaller ball for the head, she found she had trouble reaching up to place it.

She felt a hand on her arm; looking up, she found Ciel at her side, bundled up against the cold. "Allow me to assist you, Elizabeth?" he asked.

"Ciel, I thought you were too busy to come out and join me?" she said.

"Someone reminded me that all work and no play makes one a dull person," he replied, steadying the head and helping her to lift it into place.
