Author's Note: Written for Blood Bank, Edward/Carlisle, " 'Kiss of death'?" "It's just an expression, Edward." Stealth cross-over with a regular fandom I write in...
Another interminable gathering of vampire covens at the Volturi's request, in a rambling mansion up in the mountains, where no human would come to pry. Edward stuck close to Carlisle, chatting only to the vampires with whom his sire chatted, wary about approaching the others, who watched them intently, or whispered among themselves while eying them.
"Ahh, the great Doctor Cullen, and his patient," a mellow, slightly nasally voice, as a tall, silver-haired pale man in white approached, a young man with emerald green eyes following him on the end of a long chain attached to a studded black leather collar about his neck. "Brought along your little pet, have you?" the pale man said, his gaze roving over Edward's face.
"He's my young companion," Carlisle replied, patiently, not even looking at the interloper, even as he moved in between him and Edward.
"Hmmm, you always were fond of giving the kiss of death to the most lovely young men," the intruder said, his mouth flexing in mild annoyance at Carlisle's quiet defense, but showing none of it in his voice. "Well, I shall leave you to mingle with the rest of the nighttime coterie," he said, tugging on his companion's chain and moving on into the crowd, the green-eyed youth following in his wake."
"'Kiss of death'?" Edward asked, looking up at Carlisle, concerned.
"It's just an expression, Edward," Carlisle replied, putting a reassuring hand behind his back. "Don't let that one bother you: he likes to get under people's skin and upset them. His words are only meant to unsettle you needlessly."
"All right," Edward said, letting it go, though he could not help but wonder what that interloper had meant by "young men".
