Author's Note: Written for Grimm, Monroe, heartbeat(s)

The hardest part about living among humans, Monroe had found, was hearing their heartbeats. Being a Blutbad gave you the awesome superpower of keen hearing, and while that helped him to hear the suspicious clicks and grating noises he needed to hear while diagnosing a clock that needed to be repaired, it didn't help much when you needed to go among the humans, when you could hear their heartbeats.

Of course that meant he could hear everyone's heartbeats, human and Wessen alike. The heartbeats of Wessen did not affect him the way, the way that a retail wageslave hears but is not affected by the canned music in a store. The sounds just didn't sing to him the way the heartbeat of a human does. Something in the pitch of the sound, the rhythm of the beat, twigged the attention of the wolf within and made his heart beat a little quicker, to speed up in anticipation of a hunt.

That made it adventurous to live close to human dwellings, which is why his kind chose to live in packs on the edge of human towns, if not out in the wilderness, and why he lived in the woods.

And it also made things interesting when he met with Nick: his wasn't just the heartbeat of a human, but the heartbeat of a Grimm, a being he had been taught to hate and fear (if they existed at all). Nick's heart seemed to beat with an odd, dissonant pitch that disgruntled Monroe's senses. He'd taught the wolf within not to hunt humans any more, it wasn't any more of a stretch to keep from getting snarly if it heard that particular heartbeat...
