Author's Note: Written for [community profile] fic_promptly's Edward/Carlisle AU, fear of other vampires Might contain some vague references to concepts found in White Wolf's World of Darkness, specifically Vampire the Masquerade/the Requiem, as well as a possible AU version of a pairing which I don't normally write...

It wasn't often that Carlisle attended vampire gatherings, since he was not formally associated with a sect. But he did so out of courtesy, lest the Volturi and their tributaries grow suspicious, particularly after he'd turned the young man who had been his patient.

Edward had felt alone in his new life and as he moved among the vampires gathered in a mansion on the east coast, he started to feel less like a freak. It felt good not to hear the thoughts of people around him.

A young-looking male vampire with green eyes approached him. "You must be Carlisle's childe? We've heard a lot about you," he said.

"Only good things, I hope," Edward said.

The young vampire chuckled, but he sensed something odd about it. "Yes, we've heard that you're a very *good* young man," he said.

A taller, somewhat older man, white haired, pale of complexion and wearing a 19th century tailcoat approached. "Found a companion, my pet?" he asked, eying the green-eyed young man.

"Yes, I've been chatting with Carlisle's childe," the green-eyed vampire said.

The pale vampire smirked, then spoke, "Would you two care to join me in the dining room?"

"Yes, thank you," Edward replied, politely.

"Oh, of course: this should be fun," the green-eyed vampire said, beckoning Edward to follow, as the pale vampire put a hand behind his shoulder and steered him through the crowd, toward a door at the far end of the hall.

Two vampires flanked the door, looking the three of them up and down before one of them pushed the door open, letting them enter.

Within, several half-stripped humans lay sprawled on couches or tables, each one tied down, some moreso than others. A few vampires were feeding on these captives, some trying to fight off their predators, others laying inertly, eyes stunned.

The pale vampire approached a table on which a young man lay. "This one looks delicious, doesn't he?" he said, running a graceful hand over his chest. "Shall we partake of him?" he asked, looking up at his companions.

"You know how to pick them," the green-eyed vampire said, licking his lips, his fangs already extending.

"N-no, I'd rather not," Edward said, stepping away and rushing from the room.

One of the guards at the door tried to put a hand on him as he sped past, but Edward slipped his grasp, hurrying through the crowd, seeking Carlisle.

He finally spotted his sire at the edge of the crowd, speaking with a regal-looking older female vampire in a violet Victorian gown. He hurrying up to Carlisle.

"Can we step aside for a bit?" Edward asked.

"Of course," Carlisle said. To the regal vampire, he made a polite apology and stepped aside.

"I can't stay here, I've seen too much," Edward said.

Carlisle frowned. "You've seen the dining hall?" he asked.

"Yes."

"I should have warned you about that," he said. "I'm very sorry."

"No, no need to apologize, I should have asked you what to expect," Edward said. "Please, don't bring me back here, if it can be helped."

"I won't, unless they press me to bring you. You know how the Volturi are."
