Author's Note: Written for < lj user="1-million-words">'s Word of the Day 12/31/13 Resolution. Featuring Hisoka and Tsuzuki preparing for New Year's Eve. (Okay, bit of an obvious interpretation, but the boys decided to chatter in my head about resolutions, even if the custom isn't kept in their country)

"You heard of the American custom at New Years Day?" Hisoka asked, as the two of them were preparing to leave for a party at Konoe's home.

"Oooh, which one, the ball dropping at Times Square? I learned about a lot of them from the American soldiers I met after the war," Tsuzuki asked, digging in one of his bureau drawers for a better looking tie.

"No, the one about New Year's resolutions," Hisoka said, changing the laces on his dress shoes.

"Oooh, those: I think I remember one of the guys saying people made 'em on New Years Eve, but then they'd spend the rest of the night breaking them," Tsuzuki replied with a chuckle. "I could see myself doing that, if I made any resolutions."

Hisoka looked up at his partner and started to say something snarky, then stopped himself from sounding completely gruff. "Yeah, I could see you do that," he said. "All right then, I'll bite: If we made resolutions here, what would yours be?"

"Oooh, there's so much I could do, but the question is, would I stick to them?" Tsuzuki said, coming up with a red and blue paisley tie and slipping it around his neck. "I could get smarter with my spending and not buy so many sweets, but that'd just make my afterlife boring and tasteless -- literally!" He rolled his eyes, stuck out the tip of his tongue and shook his head for emphasis. Read overkill in Hisoka's mind.

"Yeah, and then you'd be dunning me for money to buy the stuff -- which you do anyway," Hisoka replied.

"I don't always!" Tsuzuki retorted, defending himself, then stopped, his eyes brightening. "Well, there's another one: I could stop bugging you for money when I'm short on it."

"Not a bad one," Hisoka said, lacing up one shoe.

"Or, hmm, I could drink less. I mean, I've got a high tolerance for the stuff, but I'd save a lot of money if I cut back on my consumption," Tsuzuki said, knotting his tie.

"And you could pay up that bar tab you owe," Hisoka said, slipping his shoe on and tightening the laces.

"Yeah, it's not considered good luck to have any debt left over from the old year into the new year," Tsuzuki admitted. "Hmmm... I could also do better with my laundry," he added, eying the jumble of things in his drawer.

"You could do better with the housework in general," Hisoka replied, getting up from his perch on the bed and taking a look at himself in the mirror.

"Looking good, Hisoka," Tsuzuki said, with an approving grin.

Hisoka looked Tsuzuki up and down. "Looking good yourself," he replied.

"Oooh, thought of another one: fight with Terazuma less," Tsuzuki replied, reaching for the dark purple vest he had dug out from the back of the closet and laid out on the bed. "Except he starts it sometimes, the beast."

"Yeah, he does, and I think he does it on purpose," Hisoka said, reaching for his jacket.

"I could see myself breaking that one the very first day back at the office," Tsuzuki groaned, slipping the vest on.

"How about not whinging at Tatsumi when he calls you on something?" Hisoka suggested.

"I don't whinge at Tatsumi, do I?" Tsuzuki asked, buttoning his vest.

"He does get your goat very easily," Hisoka replied, frankly, pulling on his jacket.

Tsuzuki frowned, his head sagging, then he lifted his chin. "Well, it would be a good one to keep: he'd have a harder time getting to me and maybe he'd back off a bit."

"Good for all of us, then: he can't get his kicks messing with me, and you don't have to listen to the nonsense," Tsuzuki replied, straightening his vest. "Looking good here?"

Hisoka looked up at Tsuzuki, giving him a small but appreciative smile. "Looking really sharp."

"Now there's a resolution I could keep: dressing sharper. Except I think I'd need to get a few more vests and some better ties," Tsuzuki replied, glancing back at his closet.

"You could try some of the thrift shops: they've got some good stuff at reasonable prices," Hisoka replied.

"Oooh, I could steal some from Tatsumi's closet," Tsuzuki replied, with a mischievous grin.

Hisoka stared at Tsuzuki as if to say, "What." Instead, he said, "I don't think he'd let you get close enough to his closet to nick any of his stuff."

"Ahh, it was just a zany idea," Tsuzuki said, reaching for his jacket slung over the back of a chair and pulling it on. "Might not work anyway, I think I'm a little heavier than Tatsumi."

"Not by much," Hisoka replied.

"Enough that cutting back on sweets might not be a bad idea," Tsuzuki replied.

"Whichever you think works, but it's not like it's something you need to hold yourself to," Hisoka said, fetching his keys and his wallet.

"True, but it might be a good challenge," Tsuzuki said, going for his trenchcoat before leading Hisoka out into the light snow falling out of the late evening sky...
