[Twilight AU] (PG-13)
Author's Note: Written for Twilight AU, Edward/Carlisle, a warm bed on a cold winter's day
The cold could affect vampires as much as it did full humans, if not moreso, since they could no longer generate their own body heat. Edward found this out the hard way that first winter after his turning. Neither of them needed to sleep, but they did lie together in bed, for at least a few hours at night, keeping up their pretense of humanity to keep the human neighbors from wondering what went on in their house.
On opening his eyes and sticking his head out from under the covers, he found himself barely able to move any other part of his body. "Brrrr," he murmured, blinking at the frost that framed the glass in their bedroom window, and pulled his head back into the relative warmth of the hollow beneath the covers.
Carlisle turned over on his pillows, smiling at his childe. "Is the cold getting to you, Edward?" he asked.
"Yes, how do you manage to stay warm?" Edward asked, pulling himself close to his sire, nestling against the older vampire.
"It isn't easy, at least the first few winters," Carlisle admitted, slipping an arm under Edward's shoulders. "Then once you've learned how to warm yourself, you grow accustomed to it."
"And how do you do that," Edward asked, skeptically.
Carlisle slid his arm out from under the covers and opened a drawer in the nightstand on his side, rummaging in it for a moment. He drew back his hand and held up a penknife with an ornate handle. "I'll let you drink from me: it's why it's good for you to have a mate," he said. "That way, the two of you can cycle blood between you: it's not much, but it can be enough to thaw yourselves out on a cold morning."
"All right, but... may we stay under here, just holding each other for a little while longer?" Edward asked, nestling close.
Carlisle smiled and slipping the penknife back into the drawer, settled down beside his childe. "Of course we may..."
