fic_promptly's My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, Twilight Sparkle, earning her cutie mark This is a bit of a patch-up fic: Bronies have noted the glaring absence of Shining Armor in the first season ep where TwiSpark gets her cutie mark, and so I saw this as a chance to explain it.
Also, this story is dedicated to our troops on duty abroad, and to their little brothers and sisters waiting for them at home.
The night before her test, and Twilight Sparkle was all twitchy-hooved at what lay ahead. Especially for one reason.
"Will Shining Armor be there?" she asked, watching at the tower window, to the road below.
Twilight Velvet, her mother, came to her side and nuzzled her mane. "He would, dearie. but he's on mane-neuvers in the Everfree Forest."
"I hope he comes home soon, though: he's been gone so long," Twilight Sparkle said, sighing. Unlike most ponies, she didn't worry for her brother's safety in that dark place:
"He'll be back as soon as he can," her mother said, reassuringly. "But in the meantime, you can send him a letter."
"I'll send him one after my test: I still have more studying to do," Twilight Sparkle said, taking her hooves down from the window sill and heading to her desk.
"Always studying, my bright little star," her mother said, shaking her head affectionately.
* * * *
The following evening, a carrier pigeon arrived at the outpost where Shining Armor was stationed.
"Looks like your little sister finally wrote you," his buddy, Storm Shield, said, eying it and grinning. "Did she run out of books to read?"
"Hush," Shining Armor said, pointing his horn at the scroll and ordering it to unroll.
Dear brother,
Today I had my test and I thought at first it was a disaster! Princess Celestia gave me a dragon's egg to hatch: my magic went out of control and turned the baby dragon into a giant baby dragon! I was afraid she would flunk me and send me back to magic kindergarten, but she was impressed. And something else also happened; I won't tell you until the next time you come home.
Your little sister,
Twilight Sparkle.
"She sounds excited about *something*," Storm Shield said, looking from the letter to Shining Armor. "You gonna find out what she's going on about?"
"If I can get a furlough, I will," he said to his buddy, rolling up the letter and tucking it into a side-pocket of his utility vest.

A few days later, Twilight Sparkle was feeding Spike, her dragon companion, when she glanced out the window, to see someone trotting up the path to the tower. Scooping Spike onto her back, she clattered down the stairs.
Shining Armor, a pack on his back, approached the tower, looking up to the windows. From inside the gates, he heard a clatter of little hooves and his little sister came rushing out, a little green and purple dragon perched on her back.
"Oh, Shining Armor, welcome home!" Twilight Sparkle cried, rearing up on her hind legs and throwing her fetlocks around his neck.
He put a hoof on her withers gently, rubbing her horn with his. "And it's good to be home, too," he said. "And is this little guy the surprise you wanted to show me?"
His little sister took her hooves from his neck. "Oh, that's part of it," she said, turning her flank toward him. "I got my cutie mark, too!"
He looked at the pink star surrounded by silver stars on his little sister's flank. "It fits you: you're our family's bright shining star."
