Author's Note: Written for Firefly, Simon/Inara, "you can go swimming in a bioluminescent lake" Set somewhat after the Big Damn Movie.

Serenity's notoriety after the incident on Miranda and the things they knew about what had happened there, had bought the crew a certain immunity from the Feds, enough that they could move about the Core with a little more leeway. They got buzzed by Alliance ships, but no one tried to board them; Alliance troops would eye them on the docks, but as much as the purple-bellies considered them with suspicion or disdain, they made no move to arrest them.

Thus, while Mal and the others were handling a night job, Simon found a note slipped under the door to the cabin that he shared with River, a note written on hand-tooled paper in a smooth, graceful hand. Inara's hand, giving him an address and a set of coordinates.

He hired a hoverickshaw and directed the driver to the location specified, a place by the lakeside.

He found a golden blanket laid out on the sand, a picnic spread with wine and candles, and Inara's saree folded neatly beside it. No sign of her, but a soft glow rose from the water.

And as he stood there, the water stirred, the waves lapping the pebbled beach, the water glowing in shades of green and violet.

Then she rose, naked, her hair covering her breasts like seaweed, like a golden-skinned Venus rising from the Aegean Sea on Earth-That-Was. She raised her eyes slowly, her arms spreading, as she met his gaze. "I promised you a swim here," she said. "Come in, the water's just right."

He stood there, mouth slightly slack in surprise, not knowing what to say, amazed at the sight.

The smile became slightly mischievous. "Are you going to stand there on the shore like that or are you going to come in?" she said.

"Oh, yes, um, one moment," he said, struggling out of his suit, leaving a trail of clothes on the sand as he hurried to meet her.

She drew him down, like the sea nymphs of legend drawing a man to his fate, the waters radiant about them both, like an unearthly glow, as if it came from her skin. If this was his fate, it couldn't be a more blissful one...
