Author's Note: Written for DreamWidth's "fic_promptly"'s Yami no Matsuei, Tsuzuki/Hisoka, fleeting beauty

Autumn in Meifu, with the sakura petals paling compared to the flaming reds and golds of the trees further down the slope from the patio. But the fallen petals and leaves formed an interesting carpet on the cobbles at Tsuzuki's feet.

"Thinking of a poem to write?" Hisoka's voice asked. Tsuzuki looked up as his partner approached the patio table with a tea tray.

"Nah, I'm not good enough with words to write anything worth reading," Tsuzuki replied, laughing.

Hisoka looked up at the trees. "The cherry blossoms are beautiful, but this time of year, they've got some competition from the autumn leaves. They'll stay, but the leaves will fall."

People can be like that, too, compared to us, Tsuzuki thought. After his passing, he'd been careful not to get too close to what remained of his family, but he'd seen them fade and he'd seen the records of their death. Even Hisoka, now his partner sitting beside him, had had to pass through the shadow of death before they could meet. He had had to fade like the autumn leaves, his strength and health and beauty fleeting away because of that curse cast on them by the pale fallen angel who now haunted them both.

He couldn't help feeling a sort of guilty gratitude, but as soon as he thought that, he pushed the thought away.

Hisoka looked at him. "You don't have to feel guilty: I've felt the same way about what happened. Doesn't change how awful it was at the time, but it helped me to find you."

Tsuzuki managed a smile. "Yes, it did."
