A year of Catholic school, his grandfather taking him to temple at New Year's Day and for his coming of age ceremony, even the Magickal rituals that a professor-friend had taught him. No amount of ritual or ceremony, for all the mental and emotional comfort they brought, could prove to him that a god existed, much less showed concern for his existence.
Except for one: the young man his grandfather had treated, returned from the dead, his face appearing in the crowds that appeared at accident sites or in disaster areas. A compassionate death god guiding souls into better lives...
